Apostolos Pitsos, known by the Greek name Απόστολος Πίτσος, was a respected Greek industrialist and entrepreneur whose imprint on Greece's industrial landscape is enduring. Born on June 29, 1918, in the lively neighborhood of Ampelokipoi, Athens, Pitsos' journey was defined by dedication, innovation, and a profound commitment to his family's legacy.
Formative Years
Apostolos Pitsos spent his early years in Ampelokipoi, embarking on his educational path. Notably, he attended the German School of Athens, sharing a classroom with future Prime Minister Georgios Rallis, a connection that would resonate throughout his life.
Displaying a keen inclination toward hard work and innovation from an early age, Pitsos began contributing to the family business, Pitsos, even before completing his education. In 1937, driven by a thirst for knowledge, he ventured to Aue, Germany, to pursue studies in mechanical engineering.
Career
Pitsos' return to Greece aligned with a pivotal moment in history, coinciding with the onset of the Greco-Italian War. Demonstrating a strong sense of duty, he joined the ranks of the anti-aircraft artillery based in Menidi.
After the war's conclusion, Apostolos Pitsos utilized his engineering expertise to elevate his family's modest handicraft enterprise into the renowned electrical company, Pitsos. A groundbreaking achievement was the establishment of modern factory facilities in Renti.
In 1977, a significant milestone was achieved when Siemens became a key partner, with the Bosch-Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH group acquiring 60% of the Greek company and Siemens S.A. Hellas acquiring 20%. This collaboration propelled the company to new heights. Pitsos' dedication to innovation was notably demonstrated in 1989 with the production of No Frost refrigerators, a groundbreaking achievement. In 1994, the company expanded into international markets by exporting kitchens to Scandinavia. Evolving with time, the company underwent a transformation in 1996, changing its name to BSP S.A. and later to BSH Home Appliances S.A. in 2002.
Later Years and Legacy
In his later years, Apostolos Pitsos resided in the charming neighborhood of Psychiko. His incredible journey reached a remarkable milestone when he celebrated his 100th birthday in 2018, a testament to his enduring spirit and vitality.
Even during challenging times, Pitsos exhibited his commitment to public health by receiving two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in 2021.
On January 1, 2023, Apostolos Pitsos peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of entrepreneurship and innovation. At the age of 104, his contributions to Greek industry and his enduring spirit will long be remembered and celebrated.
